We have all seen them outside the bars, picketing the abortion clinics holding their hand made signs filled with a message of God’s anger and judgement. They’ve warned us God is about to unleash all His anger. We have seen their social media post spewing words of hate toward gays in the name of Christ. As a Christian, have you ever stopped to consider not just the ineffectiveness of their approach but even more importantly how true or untrue their message is? In twenty years of my Christian walk, I have yet to meet one person who has come to Christ because of a ‘God is out to get you’ approach. That in itself should be enough to tell us something is off. So why do many believers, if not actively involved with these things, at a minimum will still accept these beliefs to be true?
What does the scripture really tell us? What has been God’s message from the start? Is God really an angry, insecure bully out to get anyone who does not line up with how He intended things to be? Is He forcing His will on people by coming after them with floods, storms, sickness and disease until their will is broken and they get in line? Simply said, is God mad at all of us? What do you belief about God? Maybe you do not have these extreme views but you still feel like you never measure up. Do you feel like you are repeating the same faults, always disappointing God, continually promising Him you will do better next time? Have you ever felt like you have not prayed enough, given enough, served enough, loved enough or attended church enough? Have you ever felt like you cannot make a connection with God when others around you seem to talk as if it is the easiest thing in the world, leaving you feeling like something is wrong with you? Because of these feelings or lack of them, have you given up on church or more importantly your relationship with God?
If you can say yes to any of these above questions, then what I am about to share with you is exactly for you. Here is the good news, not only is God not mad at you, He is not mad at those outside the faith. God is not disappointed in you. He is full of joy, He is full of unconditional love, He is love and because of His grace toward you, His wrath was poured out at the cross. How do I know? Because that’s what He has personally told us through His word.
In 2 Corinthians 5:18&19 Paul sheds some light on this truth by writing, Now all things are of God, who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation, that is, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, NOT IMPUTING their trespasses to them, and has committed to us the word of reconciliation.
Notice Paul writes that God was not imputing the WORLD’S trespasses against them but instead reconciling the world back to Himself. If God, two thousand years ago, was not judging and holding the sins of the world against them, why is it today we are proclaiming that He is? Where did the confusion of Him being angry and a hard task master to please come into play? Christianity has been hi-jacked and held hostage by religious beliefs that have been passed down for hundreds of generations that has caused us to shut off our brains from reading in full context and closed our hearts from rightly dividing the word. As a result, we have run people away from God and out of our churches. We have done many times more damage than good in our attempt to help people and have created a harsh judgmental atmosphere where the wounded only become more wounded, people turn on each other and hatred is bred. This is not the example we see in the life of Jesus and if we are ever going to get free in our hearts to have a real connection with God and one another we must change the way we see God. We must stop accepting lies of who He is, how He feels about us and who we are in His view. Whether you realize it or accept it, our life experiences one way or another is completely anchored in our view of God. This even goes for the self-proclaimed atheist. Because this is so, we should be positive in our view of Him and not waste away a life that is negatively impacted by untruths. Over the next several blogs, we will begin to unravel wrong beliefs, and reveal right beliefs that I confidently expect have the power to change and transform your life. I look forward to walking through this journey with you, even if some of it might challenge you to the point it makes you upset. So, let’s take off our filters and rediscover through the scripture who God has revealed Himself to be towards us.
